Phil Lesh merged two of his recent projects during a show at his new San Rafael, CA venue Terrapin Crossroads last night. The bassist put together a new version of Phil Lesh & Friends featuring his son Grahame Lesh, longtime Levon Helm Band members Larry Campbell, Teresa Williams, RatDog/Furthur keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, Furthur guitarist John Kadlecik and Furthur/Duo drummer Joe Russo. Campbell and Williams were members of Phil Lesh & Friends before the bassist turned his attention to Furthur. Recalling that version of Phil Lesh & Friends—where Campbell was often credited as playing “guitar+“—the multi-instrumentalist played fiddle throughout the night. The group relied heavily on the Dead’s early ‘70s/roots period in the first set but also busted into latter day numbers like “Foolish Heart,” “Just A Little Light” and “Days Between” at various points during the show. In addition, the ensemble covered Blind Willie Johnson’s “Keep Your Lamp Trimmed And Burning.”
Warren Haynes, Grahame Lesh, Campbell, Chimenti, Williams and Russo will join Lesh at Terrapin Crossroads tomorrow. For more on this weekend’s Phil Lesh & Friends show, be sure to read yesterday’s recap.
