The String Cheese Incident returned to Red Rocks Amphitheatre last night for the middle night of its three show run at the venue. Just as the first evening, saw two new covers and a new original (Bill Nershi’s “Song in My Head” which he has performed in other contexts), Saturday night offered a bit of the same, while still focusing on classic String Cheese material.
The band opened with “Restless Wind” and also included solid versions of “Sweet Melinda” and “Mouna Bowa.” Later on, the set closed out with a 22 minute segment that moved from “Jellyfish” into “Black Clouds.” String Cheese kicked off set two with “Desert Dawn” and also offered well-received takes on “Johnny Cash” and “Rollover.” Following “Desert Dawn,” the group also delivered a new cover, performing a version of The Police’s “Synchronicity I.” A bit later the band debuted Kyle Hollingsworth’s “Way That It Goes,” which appears on his latest solo album.
The band encored with a “How Mountain Girls Can Love,” followed by a 19 minute version of “Texas,” which saw two paragliders equipped with pyrotechnics light up the sky (see above). Then SCI returned for a second encore that began with a group hoot and moved into a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Mighty Quinn.” The group closes out its Red Rocks run tonight.
