Santana and Steve Winwood opened their Universal Tone Tour last night at St. Paul, MN’s Xcel Energy Center. Winwood opened the night with his band, performing a short set of classics that ranged from “Low Spark of High Heeled Boys” and “Dear Mr. Fantasy” to his ‘80s hits.

Carlos Santana and his band also relied on well-known material such as “Black Magic Woman,” “Oye Como Va,” “Evil Ways,” “Smooth” and “Maria, Maria.” He also previewed his forthcoming album of covers with Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love.” According to Santana’s extensive online archive, he has performed onstage with Winwood several times, most recently at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2004. Though Winwood and Santana did not collaborate last night, the jam forefathers may share the stage when their extensive tour continues at Milwaukee, WI’s Summerfest.
