In an uncharacteristic move, Phish is offering fans some clues as to which album it will cover on Halloween. The band recently uploaded a new Halloween-themed splash page that includes approximately 100 different albums and the instructions “Phish: play the last record left alive.” Each time web visitors press refresh the albums shuffle and so far six different albums have been killed: Medeski, Martin & Wood’s Shack-Man, Tom Petty’s Damn The Torpedoes ,The Who’s Who’s Next, Huey Lewis And The News’ Sports, The Velvet Underground and Nico’s self-titled album and Leonard Cohen’s I’m Your Man. David Bowie has the most album’s on the list ( Scary Monsters , Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust), while Jon Fishman is the only member of Phish to have one of his side-projects included (Pork Tornado’s humorous self-titled debuted). The rest of the list ranges from classic recordings by the Allman Brothers Band, Frank Zappa and Miles Davis to recent releases by Wilco, Arcade Fire and MGMT (the latter of whom the group covered at soundcheck in Saratoga Springs, NY this past August). In a recent radio interview, Trey Anastasio said the group started learning its Halloween cover and then switched it three days later, so anything seems fair game. The albums also appear to be “dying” rather rapidly.
