The Meters’ drummer Zigaboo Modeliste continues to make steady Bay Area live appearances with his New Aahkesstra. Yesterday, the group, which also features Darryl Anders (bass), Matt Heulitt (guitar), Eamonn Flynn (keys) and Kelly Jones (vocals) performed at San Francisco’s Pier 23 during an all ages event that ran from 3:30-7:30PM. Modeliste and his group will return to Pier 23 for similar afternoon gigs over the next two months, with all ages Sunday shows slated for September 27 and October 25. In addition, on Friday October 2, Modeliste will participate in a late night event, the For The Love of Funk show at SF’s DNA Lounge. Also on that bill will be Modeliste’s Meters’ band mate George Porter, Jr. along with Ivan Neville and Eric Krasno.
