What will you remember most about 2016?

The election and the deaths of several artists I idolize— specifically Leon Russell, Prince, Leonard Cohen, and David Bowie. On the positive end of things, 2016 was a very productive and heartening year. I finished my first film with the Tedeschi Trucks Band, and because of the chasmic event that was the election, I feel like people are starting to be more honest and vulnerable with one another. 2017 (and hopefully beyond) will be a positive time for our collective consciousness, as long as we maintain a proper balance between empathy and vigilance.

Which album or albums have you listened to most this past year?

What’s an album? I kid. Roy Ayers’ Evolution: Polydor Anthology, The Beatles’ Revolver (50 years!), and a whole lotta Supertramp. Spotify says my most played songs from last year were “Tighter, Tighter” by Alive ‘N’ Kickin’, “People Got To Be Free” by The Rascals, and “Grease” by Franki Valli. I have a serious soft-spot for Goldie Oldies.

What was your favorite show of 2016?

There’s several—The Tedeschi Trucks Band show we filmed in Oakland, Patti Smith at the Newport Folk Festival, My Morning Jacket winning Lockn’, Kool & The Gang and Morris Day at Coney Island, and I definitely felt like I hit a hole-in-one seeing Bob Weir sit-in with Phish in Nashville. I’ve been seeing them for over twenty years and that goes on the top-shelf.

What emerging artists should we watch out for in 2017?

Osei Essed & The Woes, Wyndham [Garnett], Lola Kirke, Circles Around The Sun, Nick Kinsey, Cassandra Jenkins, Delicate Steve, Invisible Familiars, Arc Iris, Stuart Bogie’s got a new project coming which is always exciting. A lot of great music abound in the coming year…

Any big plans in the works for 2017?

The Tedeschi Trucks Band Live From The Fox Oakland concert-film/documentary/album comes out in early March and we are hard at work finishing the Tedeschi Trucks-Mad Dogs & Englishmen Reunion film we shot at Lockn’ in 2015. It is the last thing Leon [Russell] ever did on camera, so it’s our imperative to get this significant document out to the world. I also plan to do everything I can to resist fascism in 2017 and you should to.
