Over the weekend, Goose performed two shows at The Caverns’ Above Ground Amphitheatre in Pelham, Tenn. The two shows – held on May 8 and 9 – both featured debuts of new songs. As Goose is wont to do, they also peppered several choice covers throughout the run.
The May 8 show kicked off with “Travelers,” which transitioned into “Doc Brown,” a song originally written for keyboardist/guitarist Peter Anspach’s old band, Great Blue. After an upbeat “Elizabeth,” Anspach and guitarist Rick Mitarotonda donned acoustic guitars for a performance of Paul Simon’s “Me & Julio Down By The School Yard.” The rendition featured whistling by lighting designer Andrew Goedde, who celebrated his birthday that night. During the second set, the band debuted a new track, “Moby,” which emerged out of “Wysteria Lane.”
On May 9, as rain fell, the band kicked off the show with a cover of The Wood Brothers’ “Atlas.” Later in the set, they yet again debuted a new track, this one titled “Welcome to Delta.” Between sets, the rain intensified, resulting in a delay and an EZ-Up tent being constructed over Anspach’s keyboard rig.
The band did not let the rain slow them down, however, as once they returned, they delivered a powerful sequence of “Madhuvan” -> “Spirit of the Dark Horse -> “Madhuvan.” The frame finished up with a cover of The Band’s “Don’t Do It.” For the encore, Goose opted to cover Talking Heads’ “Crosseyed and Painless” before reprising “Elmeg the Wise” (which closed the first set) to finish up the run.
