Members of North Mississippi All Stars and Widespread Panic Collaborate on New Album

Widespread Panic keyboardist Jo Jo Herman has collaborated with Luther and Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi All Stars on a new record titled The Smilin' Assassin. The CD was recorded in October and also features guest appearances by John Bell (Widespread Panic), Michael Houser (Widespread Panic) and George McConnell (The Kudzu kings). The album is due out in April on Fat Possum Records.

Lake Trout Confirms New Year’s Run

Lake Trout has confirmed a holiday mini-tour leading up to its New Year’s Eve show at the Belvedere Hotel in Baltimore, MD. The band will play Wetlands Preserve in New York City on December 26, the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC on December 27, the Trocadero in Philadelphia, PA on December 28, The Norva in Virginia Beach, VA on December 29 and Alley Katz in Richmond, VA on December 30.

In January, Lake Trout will tour with Galactic and Les Claypool’s Flying Frog Brigade as part of the “Sno-Core Icicle Ball.” The itinerary includes stops in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Vail, Denver, Kansas City, St Louis, Chicago, Detroit and Atlanta.

Fog City All Stars Show Will be Recorded for Possible Live CD

The Fog City All Stars show on December 29 at Bimbo’s 365 Club in San Francisco will be recorded for a possible live album. The line-up features drummer Stanton Moore (Galactic), keyboardist Robert Walter (Greyboy Allstars) and saxophonist Skerik (Critters Buggin). There will also be guest appearances by 8-string guitarist Charlie Hunter and guitarist Chris Still (Greyboy Allstars, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Robert Walter’s 20th Congress). Because Fog City Records will be recording the show, no audio or video taping will be permitted.

Addison Groove Project to Release Live Album

Addison Groove Project has announced the release of its new album Wicked Live. The CD features live material recorded this past September in Saratoga Springs, NY. Addison will play three CD release parties at the end of the month: December 28 at the House of Blues in Cambridge, MA, December 29 at the Lion’s Den in New York City and a free show December 30 at Red Square in Burlington, VT. "Wicked Live has taken too long to get out so we're really excited for this run of shows," says keyboardist Rob Marscher. The band will be accepting non-perishable food items at its merchandise table during the three-night run to support the Addison Food Project, which benefits various food banks throughout the Northeast.

Butch Trucks, Jaimoe Added to Warren Haynes Christmas Jam

Original Allman Brothers Band members Butch Trucks and Jaimoe have been added to the 12th Annual Warren Haynes Christman Jam at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Asheville, NC. The line-up also includes Gregg Allman, John Popper, Dave Schools, Kevn Kinney, Edwin McCain and Matt Abts as well as original Aquarium Rescue Unit members Col. Bruce Hampton, Jimmy Herring, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Sipe, who will perform together for the first time since 1994.

Complete Allman Brothers Band Discography Released

Author Dean Reynolds has released “The Complete Allman Brothers Band Discography.” The book includes color reproductions of the band’s entire record catalog as well as song histories and statistics. Musicians from Miracle Orchestra and The Slip to Perform Together

Members of Miracle Orchestra, The Slip will perform together December 10 at Lilli’s in Somerville, MA. Billed as The Mystery Mullet Circus, the line-up features Jared Sims (saxophone, flute, clarinet) and Bill Carbone (drums) of Miracle Orchestra, Marc Friedman (bass) of The Slip and Eric Hofbauer (guitar). Page McConnell and Warren Haynes Collaborate in New York City

Phish keyboardist Page McConnell performed with Warren Haynes and harmonica player Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson) last night at Irving Plaza in New York City. The musicians took the stage during a release party for Danny Clinch's new book "When the Iron Bird Flies", a photo chronicle of the Tibetan Freedom Concerts from 1996-1999. McConnell, Haynes and Raphael played a short set consisting of "Back at the Chicken Shack/Further On Up The Road," "Been Loving You Too Long," "Who's Been Talkin'", "She Said She Said," "One," and "Little Wing."

The event was also a benefit for The Milarepa Fund, a nonprofit organization co-founded by Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys. A percentage of the proceeds from Clinch's book will also be donated to the Milarepa Fund.

Blue Floyd Announces West Coast Tour

Blue Floyd has released West Coast tour dates for January and February. The Doors Release Archival Material

The Doors have announced plans to release a series of 36 CDs from its archive through it’s new label, Bright Midnight Records. The three remaining members, John Densmore, Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek, have selected material from live performances recorded in the late 60s and early 70s to be released exclusively through the band’s website. Three new CDs will be made available every six months for the next six years. "Our goal is to give serious Doors fans the material they want, including professional eight-track recordings of concerts, some previously available only as overpriced and inferior sounding recordings," the band said in a statement. The first CD is titled The Bright Midnight Sampler: 14 Songs/8 Concerts and features live material recorded in eight different U.S. cities in 1970.

Members of Jiggle, John Brown’s Body and Fully Celebrated Orchestra to Collaborate Tonight

Members of Jiggle, John Brown’s Body and Fully Celebrated Orchestra will take the stage tonight at Harper’s Ferry in Allston, MA. Billed as Organically Grown, the band plays a mix of roots reggae and free jazz and is comprised of keyboardist Paul Wolstencroft (Jiggle), drummer Tommy Benedetti (John Brown’s Body), saxophonist Timo Shanko (Fully Celebrated Orchestra) and bassist Tim Kelley (Resophonics). Special guests are expected to sit in as well.

Project Object to Cover Joe's Garage on New Year's Eve

Project Object, featuring special guest Ike Willis, will perform at Lion’s Den in New York City on New Year’s Eve. The band has announced plans to perform the classic Frank Zappa album Joe’s Garage, in its entirety. The group’s line-up features original Zappa guitarist Willis, Rick Bartow (bass), Jeff Breedlove (keyboards), André Cholmondeley (guitar), Robbie Mangano (guitar), Mumbo (drums, percussion), Wes Saich (drums, keys, percussion) and Jordan Shapiro (kayboards). King Freud Releases Debut Album

Strangefolk has added an all ages show at Higher Ground in Winooski, VT on December 30. The band will also be performing there on New Year’s Eve, however it will be a 21+ event. Double Trouble Album Features Susan Tedeschi, Dr. John and Willie Nelson

Double Trouble has signed a record deal with Tone-Cool Records and will release its debut album, Been a Long Time. The band features Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon who are joined on the album by special guests Susan Tedeschi, Dr. John, Willie Nelson, Jimmie Vaughan, Doyle Bramhall II, Eric Johnson, Derek O'Brien, Malford Milligan, Lou Ann Barton, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Charlie Sexton (who co-produced the album). Phish Companion Released, Two Additional Phish Books on the Way

The Mockingbird Foundation has released The Phish Companion: A Guide to the Band and Their Music. The book’s 928 pages feature song histories, show reviews, jamming tune charts, discography, statistics, interviews, and essays from 1,488 contributors. It is available now in most bookstores. Schleigho Confirms New Year’s Run

Schleigho has confirmed shows leading up to its New Year’s Eve concert at Forward Hall in Erie, PA. The band will perform December 28 at Milestones in Rochester, NY, December 29 at the Lafayette Tap Room in Buffalo, NY and December 30 at the Happy Dog Music Hall in Cleveland, OH. Deep Banana Blackout, Terrapin Foundation to Hold Instrument Drive at NYE Shows

Deep Banana Blackout and The Terrapin Foundation will be holding an instrument drive at the band’s New Year's shows at the Mertens Theater in Bridgeport, CT December 30 and 31. They are requesting that fans bring used or new instruments to the Terrapin Foundation Table during the two-night stand. All donations will benefit the George Washington Carver Community Center, which serves low income, at-risk youth in the Norwalk, CT area. The Foundation plans to work with the Carver Center next summer to establish a music program.

Shannon Lynch, Terence Lynch and Chris Fisher of Conehead Buddha sat in with Jiggle Saturday night at The Haunt in Ithaca, NY. Lynch (saxophone), Lynch (trumpet) and Fisher (percussion) joined Jiggle when the band learned that guitarist Gary Backstrom would be late arriving to the show. They collaborated on an extended version of “Cheeky Monkey.” Backstrom arrived shortly thereafter and played the remainder of the set.

Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio sat in with Medeski, Martin & Wood Friday night at the Pallace Theater in Albany, NY. Anastasio emerged during the second song of the second set and remained for the remainder of the show, including the encore. Billy Martin introduced Trey as “Family Man.”

Galactic Records Live CD

Galactic will be recording its shows tonight and tomorrow night for an upcoming live album. The shows will be held at Tipitina’s in New Orleans, where the band recorded last night as well. The tentative release date for the CD is scheduled for next May. Lil' Rascals Brass Band opens tonight’s show and Rebirth Brass Band will take the stage tomorrow night. No audience taping will be allowed.

ThaMuseMeant Prepares New Albums, Announces Hiatus

ThaMuseMeant is currently working on an acoustic trio album outside Boulder, CO. The group is also compiling live material recorded on its last tour. The live album is due to be released on High Sierra Records next year. Still no word on a release date for the acoustic CD. At the end of December, ThaMuseMeant will perform as a trio during a three-night run with The Slip: December 29 at Wetlands Preserve in New York City, December 30 at the Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton, MA and December 31 at the Somerville Theater in Somerville, MA.

Meanwhile Drummer Jeff Sussmann has parted ways with the band. Auditions for a new drummer will be held in January and February, when the band plans to take some time off. The website states: “The band feels that they need some space away from each other in order to develop and grow.”

The Fog City All Stars will perform December 29 at Bimbo’s 365 Club in San Francisco. The Either/Orchestra Turns 15

The Either/Orchestra will celebrate its 15th anniversary this month with two shows in New England. The band has recently been performing new material and is planning work on a new recording. The New Deal Signs with Jive Records

The New Deal has recently signed a record contract with Jive Records. The label is home to such artists as Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada, Morcheeba, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys and N'Sync. “The label has set up a nice deal with us, allowing us to still release live shows on our Sound + Light label as well as pieces of vinyl for extended mixes,” says keyboardist Jamie Shields. “We are very happy and proud to be a part of a really great organization and look forward to the ability to bring the New Deal's music and vibe to places we have yet to hit, including Europe, Asia, and of course, back to the U.S. west coast.” The trio has also inked a deal with the Nettwerk Management company (Barenaked Ladies, Sarah McLaughlin, Dido).

Strangefolk Announces Addition of Two New Members

Strangefolk has just announced the addition of guitarist/vocalist Luke Montgomery and keyboardist Scott Shdeed to the band. The group began auditioning new musicians after the departure of guitarist/vocalist Reid Genauer in September. Montgomery and Shdeed first performed with Strangefolk November 4 at the Mad Mountain Tavern in Waitsfield, VT.

Soulfarm Holiday Shows will Benefit Local Food Banks

Bruce Cockburn will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame this March. Cockburn will be honored at next year’s Juno Awards in Hamilton, Ontario. It's "a great honor," says Cockburn. Ratdog Show Canceled Due to Fire

Ratdog’s show at the Palladium in Worcester, MA was canceled Saturday night when a fire was reported in the building around 9:15 p.m. About 1,200 people were safely evacuated from the venue while opening band The Persuasions performed. The fire broke out in a small room attached to the balcony. Fire Captain George DuBois said the cause of the fire seemed suspicious.

The show’s promoter, MassConcerts is attempting to reschedule the Ratdog concert. There has not yet been an announcement on when the building will reopen.

In a related story, Phish was finally mentioned on "The Simpsons" last night. Although the band has quoted the show’s theme song since the early 90s, last night’s episode marked the first time the program has mentioned Phish by name. The plot involved an environmental group that was trying to save a Springfield forest and was seeking an individual to live in a tree in protest. When several people volunteered, the group’s leader warned “once you’re up there, you can’t come down; not for a Phish concert, not even for Burning Man.”

Anastasio wrote the song “Kissed By Mist” about Julia Butterfly Hill, a woman who lived in a 200-foot Redwood in Stafford, CA from December 10, 1997 to December 18, 1999. The tree was named Luna.

Special Guests Join Miracle Orchestra at CD Release Party

DJ Mr. Rourke, Taylor Ho Bynum and Leslie Helpert sat in with Miracle Orchestra last night at the House of Blues in Cambridge, MA. Tony Trischka, Tuvan Throat Singer Sit in with Bela Fleck & the Flecktones

Tony Trischka and Kongar-ol Ondar were among the special guests to join Bela Fleck and the Flecktones last night at the Somerville Theater in Somerville, MA. The concert was the third of a four-night run at the venue. Trischka emerged during the first set to perform a duet – of sorts – with Fleck. As the rest of the band left the stage, Trischka stood directly behind Fleck and wrapped his arms around Fleck’s banjo. Both musicians then played a song on the same instrument, at the same time, a practice the duo has performed many times in the past.

Kongar-ol Ondar is a throat singer from Tuva, who can sing multiple pitches at the same time. He joined the band at different points throughout the night. The Authority Plans Reunion Show in NYC

In the early 90s, The Authority was a common name in the underground groove scene in New York, playing in venues such as Wetlands Preserve, Nightingales and The Marquee Club. The band broke up in 1995 due to personal differences. There has been no announcement on whether or not the band plans to book more shows in the future.

Beginning in January of 2001, bassist Joseph Patrick Moore will join Blueground Undergrass. Moore was a member of Col. Bruce Hampton’s Fiji Mariners and has also performed with Planet Zambee. He recently toured with original Meters guitarist Leo Nocentelli.

Phish Featured on Benefit CD

Phish is featured on a new benefit CD titled KFOG Live from the Archives 7, which was released yesterday. The band donated a live version of “The Inlaw Josie Wales” that was recorded at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA on May 18, 2000. The album also includes live tracks from Ben Harper, Counting Crows, Susan Tedeschi, Squeeze, Indigo Girls, Joe Satriani, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Melissa Etheridge, Old 97's, John Popper, Wood, Tori Amos, Jeremy Toback. Indian tabla player Sandip Burman sat in with Bela Felck & the Flecktones last night at the Somerville Theater in Somerville, MA. The show was the first of a record four-night run at the venue. Burman joined the band for the majority of the show and took an extended solo during the second set. The Flecktones will welcome special guests to the stage during each of the next three nights in preparation for Friday’s concert at the Quick Center in Fairfield, CT, which will be recorded for a DirecTV broadcast. Tonight Andy Narell (steel pans) will join the band, tomorrow night Paul McCandless (oboe) & Paul Hanson (bassoon) will sit in and Thursday McCandless, Hanson and Narell will all collaborate with the Flecktones. Friday’s recorded show will feature all of the guests from this week’s four-night run in Somerville. The two-hour live video will air in early 2001 for DirecTV subscribers. Galactic to Perform at Cannabis Cup During European Tour

Galactic kicks off a European mini-tour this Friday at the Jazz Café in London. On November 19 the band will perform at the Melweg Cannabis Cub in Amsterdam. Other European dates include November 20 at Café Rust in Copenhagen, Denmark and November 21 at Fabrik in Hamburg, Germany.

After returning to the U.S., Galactic will play a two-night stand at Tipitina’s in New Orleans on December 1st and 2nd. Both shows will be recorded for an upcoming live album. Audience taping will not be allowed at these shows. No other details on the live CD have been released.

A new release featuring Phish’s Trey Anastasio and lyricist Tom Marshall is now available. Titled Trampled by Lambs and Pecked by the Dove, the CD includes 25 tracks recorded by Anastasio and Marshall during four song writing sessions in 1997. The album consists of many songs that are featured on Phish’s The Story of the Ghost and Farmhouse albums, as well as songs played by Phish in concert. Tree O' Frogs Revamps Line-up

Robert Walter sat in with Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe last night at the Fox Theater in Boulder, CO. Walter joined the band for James Brown’s “Damn right, I’m Somebody,” “Dance Lesson #2,” which is the title track of Denson’s forthcoming solo album, and The Greyboy Allstars’ “Soul Dream.” The show was recorded for an upcoming KDTU live album. Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe and Robert Walter’s 20th Congress play again tonight and tomorrow at the Fox Theater. Both shows will also be recorded for possible inclusion on the live album. Project/Object to Release First Album

Frank Zappa tribute band Project/Object will release its first album, Absolutely Live: Project/Object With Special Guest Ike Willis November 14 on Phoenix Presents. The CD was recorded live at New York’s Wetlands Preserve this past summer. Members of Strangefolk Take Stage with Special Guests

The members of Strangefolk played Saturday with two special guests at the Mad Mountain Tavern in Waitsfielf, VT. It was the first time guitarist Jon Trafton, bassist Erik Glockler and drummer Luke Smith performed publicly since the departure of lead singer and guitarist Reid Genauer in early September. Guitarist Luke Montgomery (Folk Stone) and keyboardist Scott Shdeed (Funkus Groovus, Howard Shaft) joined the band for the entire show Saturday night. The setlist included several new tunes including Glockler’s “Over Portland,”as well as older Strangefolk material such as “Fishin’,” “Who I am” and “All The Same.” Many fans are speculating that Montgomery and Shdeed may become permanent members of Strangefolk, although nothing has been confirmed at this time. According to Strangefolk management, an announcement on the band’s future plans is expected soon.

John Brown's Body Collaborates with The Slip

Members of John Brown’s Body sat in with The Slip Friday at the Somerville Theatre in Somerville, MA. At the end of the second set, Tommy Benedetti (drums) and Chris Welter (trumpet) joined the band for a new untitled song, which featured Slip drummer Andrew Barr on steel drums. For the encore, Benedetti and Welter returned for “54-56 Was My Number.”

Agent Porridge Breaks Up

Agent Porridge has announced that after six years, it has broken up. In recent months the group, which had first performed as a septet and then gradually reduced its numbers, had gigged as a three piece. The band's final incarnation included original members guitarist Alex Weinstein and keyboardist Brian Bisky (who had moved to bass) and drummer Brett Rothenhaus. The Recipe will record a set of music for the radio program "Mountain Stage" this Sunday in Martinsburg, WV. Deep Banana Blackout Announces New Year’s Eve Plans

Deep Banana Blackout has teamed up with Terrapin Presents to host a two-night New Year’s Eve celebration at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. The shows will take place on Saturday December 30 and Sunday December 31 at the Mertens Theater, located in the Arnold Bernhard Arts and Humanities Center. It is a hometown gig for both Terrapin Presents, which produces the annual Gathering of the Vibes festival, and the band. "We spend time traveling all over the country representing Fairfield County," says Deep Banana Blackout bass player Benj Lefevre. "It will be nice to show people our hometown, to give them an idea as to where we got our start."

Les Claypool Announces Primus Hiatus, Flying Frog Brigade NYE Plans

Les Claypool has announced that Primus is on indefinite hiatus. “I apologize, but there won't be a Primus project for some time,” says Claypool. “But I can assure you that when it does materialize, Mr. Tim 'Herb' Alexander will once again be at the helm of his mighty mountain of drums…From my perspective, I see no real reason to continue doing Primus without Tim Alexander. Brain (Bryan Mantia, Primus drummer) has left the band and rumor has it he is currently playing with Guns and Roses. Tim and I have worked together recently and we both agree a reunion is inevitable. The thought of working with Tim on some new Primus material is definitely exciting to me and hopefully (schedules permitting) it will happen sooner than later.” For now, the bassist is excited about his latest project, Les Claypool’s Flying Frog Brigade. “This is the greatest band I have ever been associated with...bar none. The Frog Brigade is my passion these days. Expect a live record to be released at our New Years Fillmore show...”

Buffalo-based The Waz has been nominated for several Nightlife Magazine Awards. Susan Tedeschi Album Certified Gold

Susan Tedeschi’s album, Just Won’t Burn has been certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. A gold record represents net sales of at least 500,000 units. E.M. Grueve Wins Cicero's Battle of the Jam Bands

E.M. Grueve won the Second Annual Battle of the Jam Bands last night at Cicero’s in St. Louis. The grand prize included over $4000 in recording time at the Smith/Lee Recording Studio. Preliminary rounds of the contest were voted on by crowd response and were held each Thursday during the month of October. A panel of judges was selected to vote in the final round, which featured The Illtet and Madam Sky up against E.M. Grueve. During String Cheese Incident’s October 21 show at Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor, MI, an artist by the name of Noah Kaplan painted a large portrait of Jimi Hendrix, while the band played “Voodoo Chile.” The band has announced that the painting will be auctioned off on E-Bay and the proceeds will be donated to charity. The Arthur Dent Foundation’s Halloween Party to Offer $500 Award for Best Costume

The Arthur Dent Foundation will play a Halloween show October 28 at Tammany Club in Worester, MA. There will be a costume contest held and the winner will be awarded $500. Billy Martin, Vernon Reid will Perform at The Healing Hand Percussion Circle Benefit Show Tonight

Billy Martin and Vernon Reid are among the musicians that will perform tonight at The Healing Hand Percussion Circle at Tonic in New York City. The concert is a benefit for The Amputee Victims of Sierra Leone. The goal of the event is to create a community of healing through rhythm and to raise awareness about the current social, political, and economic crisis facing Sierra Leone. Proceeds from the show will be donated to World Hope International and will be used for prosthetic limbs, physical therapy, and psychological trauma counseling for the maiming victims of this country's civil war. “As a guitarist I began to think about my hands and the things we all do with our hands," says Reid. “Waving, washing, writing, voting, lifting, scratching, touching, playing, patting, holding, clapping, smoothing, spreading, kneading, knocking, reaching, dining, drinking, drumming. And then the notion of not being able to drum as an African became unthinkable to me. The Healing Hand Percussion Circles grew out of these meditations.” Other artists that will be performing include Marsha Starks (Women Of The Calabash), Will Calhoun (Jungle Funk, Living Colour), Bashiri Johnson (Whitney Houston) , Suphala, Phyllis Bethel (ASE' Drumming Circle) Eddie Hall, Michael Wimberley (Jaron Lanier), and Alex Alexander (Ritchie Blackmore). Phish’s September 30 show from Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas will be re-webcast on Halloween night. The show included the U.S. debut of “Walfredo,” the entire crowd singing “Happy Birthday” to guitarist Trey Anastasio and the rare Colonel Forbin’s Ascent”->“Famous Mockingbird.” During the second set, Anastasio makes an announcement that the band will be taking a hiatus and that he hopes they can come back for another 17 years. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones to Release Live DVD

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones’ November 17 show will be taped for a DirecTV special. The Flecktones will be joined by several of the musicians that appear on their latest album, Outbound. Special guests will include Sandip Burman (tabla); Paul Hanson (bassoon); Paul McCandless (oboe); and Andy Narell (steel pans) and John Clark on French Horn. New Orleans-based Idletime has recently signed with Louisiana Red Hot Records. The record label represent many southern acts including Rebirth Brass Band, Juice, Freddy Omar and Coolbone. Idletime’s latest album, Time Stops, which will be released November 29. Guest percussionist Michael Skinkus (Michael Ray and the Cosmic Krewe) is featured on the album. The group has just finished remastering the CD at Route One Studios in Mississippi.

Neil Young Live CD on the Way

A new live Neil Young album entitled Road Rock Vol. 1, will be released November 21 on Reprise Records. The single-CD features tracks recorded this past summer on Young’s North American tour. The Allman Brothers Band has a new live CD on the way, titled Peakin’ at the Beacon. All of the material on the album was recorded live at the band's thirteen-night run at the Beacon Theater in New York City, which took place between March 9 - 25, 2000. Derek Trucks Band Postpones Japan Dates

The Derek Trucks Band has postponed its three upcoming shows in Japan. The band was originally scheduled to perform at Big Cat in Osaka on October 27, Astro Hall in Tokyo on October 29 and Bay Hall in Yokohama on October 29. “Unfortunately our Japan dates have been postponed until the Spring due to circumstances out of our control,” says DTB manager Blake Budney.

Live Benefit Album Features Gov’t Mule, Jimmy Herring and Susan Tedeschi Among Others

Warren Haynes has just finished producing a benefit album titled Wintertime Blues. The double-CD features live material recorded at the 11th Annual Warren Haynes Christmas Jam, which was held December 22, 1999 at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Asheville, NC. Artists appearing on the album include Gov’t Mule, Edwin McCain, Susan Tedeschi, The Derek Trucks Band, Jimmy Herring, Little Milton, Col. Bruce Hampton, Cry of Love, Larry McCray, Johnny Neel, Paul Riddle and Mike Barnes. The track listing includes covers of Bob Marley’s “Rastaman Chant” and The Meter’s “Chicken Strut,” performed by the Derek Trucks Band, as well as the Gov’t Mule original “Bad Little Doggie” and Haynes’ “Lay Your Burden Down.” The album concludes with a rendition of “Merry Christmas Baby,” that features Gov’t Mule with Little Milton, Tedeschi, Trucks and Neel.

Wintertime Blues will be released November 28. All proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity.

House Band Sits in with moe.

The McMennamin House Band jammed with moe. last night at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, OR. The group is the house band for several clubs in Portland and performed in between sets at last night's show. When the members of moe. took the stage at the beginning of the second set, a jam ensued between both bands.

Strangefolk Launches New Website

Strangefolk has recently revamped its website. New features on the site include a fan poll, chat room, setlist database and screen savers. Both guitarist Jon Trafton and drummer Luke Smith also have pages on the website, where they keep fans updated on what’s going on with the band. Currently, Strangefolk doesn’t have any shows planned. Guitarist and lead vocalist Reid Genauer performed his final show with the band at the Garden of Eden Festival Labor Day weekend in Vermont. There has not been an announcement on whether or not the band will replace him.

Bob Weir Sits in with Phish

Bob Weir sat in with Phish last night at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA. Weir joined the band for the encore, which began with “El Paso.” “Chalkdust Torture,” came next and featured Bobby taking short guitar solos in between each verse. Before finishing the song, the band segued into “West L.A. Fadeway.”

Phish will conclude its fall tour tonight at Shoreline. It will be the band’s final show before taking a hiatus from touring. The length of the break has not been announced.

Medeski Martin & Wood Announces Fall Tour

Frogwings Debut Released Today

Croakin' at Toad's, the initial disc from Frogwings, finally reaches stores today. Butch Trucks, who put together the group (and serves as CEO of the band's label, Flying Frog Records) states that Frogwings “evolved in 1997 from my wish to do some serious playing with my nephew, Derek.” In addition to Derek Trucks, the line-up features John Popper, Jimmy Herring, Oteil Burbridge, Marc Quinones and Kofi Burbridge. Croakin' at Toad's collects perfomances from last year's shows at Toad's Place and Wetlands Preserve. The band has not announced any October tourdates, as its players currently are committed to gigs with Phil and Friends, Oteil & The Peacemakers and the Derek Trucks Band. Ekoostik Hookah Adds Percussionist, Expands to Sextet

Following a year of regular performances with Ekoostik Hookah, percussionist Johnny Polansky has officially joined the band. The announcement came this past weekend in Murray City, OH at Fall Fest. During that show, Vassar Clements also took the stage with the band adding fiddle to a number of songs including "Rollin' In My Sweet Baby's Arms," and "Me & Bobby McGee" as well as an extended run through "Keepin Time." Kid Rock Sits in with Phish, Oysterhead Reunites in Vegas

Kid Rock sat in with Phish for four songs Friday night at Thomas & Mack Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Rock first emerged in the second set for a cover of Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way.” Next came Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight,” which featured drummer Jon Fishman briefly playing guitar and rapping a few lines as well. The set closed with Rock singing the AC/DC classic “You Shook Me All Night Long.” For the encore Phish and Rock performed Grand Funk Railroad’s “We’re An American Band.”

Later Friday Night, Les Claypool’s Flying Frog Brigade performed at The House of Blues in Las Vegas. The encore featured Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio and drummer Stewart Copeland (The Police) who joined Claypool for an Oysterhead reunion of sorts. (Oysterhead had performed only once previously, at the Saenger Theater in New Orleans on 5-4-00). The trio played “Used to be the Owner of the World”-> “Smoke on the Water”-> “Used to be the Owner of the World.” The show concluded with all members of the Flying Frog Brigade and Oysterhead performing The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows.”

Boston’s Paradise Rock Club to Re-open

The Paradise Rock Club in Boston will re-open its doors after being shut down last March after a number of violations including underage drinking. Over the last twenty-five years, The Paradise has featured up and coming artists such as Phish, U2, Dire Straights, Percy Hill, Strangefolk, moe., Billy Joel and Jerry Seinfeld among others. Acoustic Syndicate will Perform at Benefit Concert

The Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery will celebrate it’s seventh anniversary by hosting benefit concert November 18 at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, CO. New Ratdog Album Released

Ratodog’s new album, Evening Moods, was released this week on Grateful Dead Records. The CD is Bob Weir’s first non-Grateful Dead studio work since the early 80’s. Material for the album was recorded at The Coast Studio in San Francisco. Ten tracks, including a version of the Dead’s “Corrina,” are featured on the release. “One For Woody” Benefit Features Several Surprise Guests

Allen Woody was honored at a special benefit concert last night at New York’s Roseland Ballroom. The bill featured The Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh & Friends, members of the Black Crowes, and Warren Haynes, Matt Abts & Friends. Phil & Friends opened the show with “Dark Star.” The line-up included Haynes, Jimmy Herring, John Molo and Rob Barraco (this line-up will tour beginning September 30 at Memorial Auditorium in Burlington, VT). Other highlights of the set included “Unbroken Chain” and an upbeat cover of Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love.”

The Allman Brothers took the stage next with the guitar duo of Haynes and Herring remaining intact, as regular ABB guitarist Derek Trucks was unavailable due to a previously scheduled show with his band in North Carolina. Little Milton sat in for a portion of the set, including “Soulshine.” The Black Crowes’ Chris and Rich Robinson then emerged for “Dreams” before Lesh returned for “Franklin’s Tower,” during which Allmans' bassist Oteil Burbridge sang lead vocals.

Members of The Black Crowes then performed a short set, with a line-up consisting of the Robinson brothers, Steve Gorman, Eddie Harsch, Audley Freed and Gordy Johnson. The band covered Bob Marley’s “Kinky Reggae” and then invited Haynes to sit in on “Shake Your Money Maker” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well.”

The final and longest set of the evening featured Gov’t Mule members Haynes and Matt Abts hosting a long list of special guests including Widespread Panic bassist David Schools, Berry Oakley Jr., Danny Lewis, Johnny Neel, Merl Saunders, Edwin McCain, Hootie and the Blowfish’s Darius Rucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Artimus Pyle, Kevin Kinney, Hot Tuna’s Michael Falzarano and Mountain’s Leslie West. Many of the musicians who performed earlier in the evening also returned at different points of the set. One configuration included Abts, Neel and Oakley Jr., who were members of Blue Floyd with Woody. Along with Haynes, they performed Pink Floyd’s “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” and later sang the appropriate “Wish You Were Here,” with Lesh. The set also included “Lay Your Burden Down,” Traffic’s “Low Spark on High Heeled Boys,” Neil Young’s “Cortez The Killer,” “Lovelight,” “Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad” and “Mississippi Queen.”

The final song of the night was a stirring version of “I Shall Be Released,” during which several musicians joined in on vocals. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the Savannah Woody Education Fund. For more information, visit www.mule.net.

The Big Wu to Release New Album

The Big Wu’s new album, Folktales, will be released October 17 on Phoenix Rising Records. The release includes tracks such as "Angie O'Plasty,” “Minnesota Moon” and “House of Wu” among others. “The thing that really sparkles about The Big Wu is that we write damn good songs,” says guitarist and Jambands.com columnist Jason Fladager. “Our writing might appear to be all over the place, but the ultimate sound is all BIG WU.”

Phish lyricist Tom Marshall's band, Amfibian has announced its fall tour dates. Somatose In Search of New Bassist

Boston-based Somatose has parted ways with bassist James Curl, due to musical differences. The Wallflowers to Join The Who at 4-Night NYC Run

The Wallflowers have been added to The Who’s four shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City, October 3, 4, 6 and 7. Page and The Black Crowes were originally scheduled to perform with The Who, but canceled due to Page’s ongoing back problems. Ticket holders that are not interested in the new bill, can opbtain a refund at the point of purchase before October 3.

Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes have canceled their entire fall tour, which was slated to run from September 15 to October 7.

Fareed Haque Sits in with The Slip; Tony O. Facilitates Show

Jazz guitarist Fareed Haque sat in with The Slip Friday at The Note in Chicago, IL. Haque joined the band for the first three songs of the second set, “Impressions,” “Lucky Dragon” and “Moral Decay.” He played acoustic guitar as well as a 12-string fretless guitar.

While en route to Montana, The Slip’s van broke down. Luckily, Jambands.com writer Tony Oliveira was driving by and happened to spy the band and gave the trio a ride to tonight’s show at The Elk’s Lodge in Missoula, MT, which will go on as scheduled.

Hanson sits in with The Other Ones

The Hanson brothers sat in with The Other Ones Saturday night at Bryce Jordan Center in State College, PA. Isaac, Zac and Taylor Hanson sang on "I Know You Rider" to close the set and then returned for the encore to sing two verses of "The Weight." The Other Ones Steve Kimock (lead guitar), Mickey Hart (percussion, vocals), Bill Kreutzmann (drums), Bruce Hornsby (keyboards, vocals), Bob Weir (rhythm guitar, vocals), Alphonso Johnson (bass) and Mark Karan (lead guitar, vocals). Saturday was not the first time Hanson shared the stage with Bob Weir. The three brothers joined Weir and Rob Wasserman at Wetlands Preserve in New York City on February 13, 1999.
