Mitch Cohen: 1961-2000
The Jam Band community has lost one of its biggest supporters. Also known on-line as “The Answer Man,” Cohen worked with management company Mission Control, promoting bands such as Jazz Is Dead, Justice League and Blue Floyd. “One of the most positive spirits I have ever encountered even in the face of a terminal illness,” says guitarist Jimmy Herring (Allman Brothers, Jazz Is Dead, ARU). “Always in the face of adversity, he had such positive energy. He was a devoted father and husband and a true listener. I will never forget him.” Cohen is survived by his wife Joan and two children. He will be missed…

Paul Kantner Sued by Jefferson Airplane
Jefferson Airplane Inc. is suing founding member Paul Kantner for allegedly performing under the band’s name without permission. Kantner has been touring with Slick Aguilar, Chris Smith, Diana Mangano and fellow founding member Marty Balin and performing Jefferson Airplane’s 1969 album Volunteers in its entirety. In 1985, Kantner left Jefferson Airplane and signed an agreement stating that he would not use the words "Jefferson" or "Airplane" for commercial use without the permission of Jack Cassidy, Grace Slick, Jorma Kaukonen and manager Bill Thompson, the other shareholders of the band’s corporate name. "I'd rather have a root canal than to sue somebody we're partners with," says Thompson. "Jefferson Airplane is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and people are going to these shows expecting to see Grace Slick sing and there's some other girl singer. It's a fraud. We want to stop it."

The Jammys: Musical Overview
Last evening’s Jammys presented a range of sounds and textures reflecting the diversity of the jam/groove scene. The night began as the curtain ascended to reveal the Jammys Orchestra, with band leader Fuzz guiding an all-star line-up through “Watermelon Man.” The Orchestra included Merl Saunders, John Scofield, Marc Friedman, Eric Kalb, Jonny Durkin and a horn section featuring Rob Somerville & Volo (Deep Banana Blackout) and TK from Foxtrot Zulu. Co-host Peter Prince’s “Jammys Theme” came next, followed by The New Deal’s richly-improvised tribute to Bill Monroe. The Slip’s performance referenced the music of Bob Dylan, at one point trailing into the ether then drifting back for a moving take on “Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright.” Next, John Scofield returned to the stage with Soulive for a simmering performance, offering one particularly scintillant run as Sco and Eric Krasno went toe-to-toe exchanging musical phrases. The high-octane talent of Frogwings (Butch Trucks, Derek Trucks, Oteil Burbridge, Kofi Burbridge, Jimmy Herring, Mark Quinones) which followed was further enhanced when Susan Tesdeschi took the stage as well. Next, the Disco Biscuits offered a classical piece and then Les Claypool joined them for a thirty minute funk/punk/techno-fusion medley which incorporated Pink Floyd's "Have a Cigar" and The Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows." In their slot, Deep Banana Blackout single-handedly honored two figures, moving from Santana’s “Everybody’s Everything” to Frank Zappa’s “I’m The Slime.” Strangefolk followed, welcoming Merl Saunders to offer a classic Grateful Dead segued which moved from “Scarlet Begonias” into “Fire on the Mountain.” The evening concluded in a celebratory fashion as Fuzz and company returned for a run through “It’s Your Thing,” with Jen Durkin and Peter Prince trading vocals, Eric Krasno and Brad Barr joining in on guitars, Andrew Barr and Jim Loughlin handling percussion and the Jammys brass attack contributing further bite.
Special Presentations Occur at Jammys
The Jammys also were marked by a number of special presentations. Following Frogwings’ set mid-way through the show a movie screen was lowered to present a brief ceremony that had taken place earlier that evening. The Wetlands Lifetime Achievement Award was presented by Wetlands Preserve owner Peter Shapiro to B.B. King back stage at B.B.’s new club in New York City. King also received an additional prize: a flannel set of Jammys-logo emblazoned pajamas. A moving tribute appeared earlier in the evening when Allman Brothers band archivist Kirk West eulogized his friend and fellow tapefiend Dick Latvala. Other notable presenters included Anthony Decurtis, John Scofield, Dennis McNally, Richard Gehr, Steve Bloom, Sam Kopper and Brian Reen.
Text of Jammys Acceptance Letter: Phish
Phish bass player Mike Gordon accepted the band's Jammy for Live Set of the Year [12/31/99 II], via fax backstage from Nashville, where the band opened its summer tour. Here is the text:
Greetings from Nashville.
Hopefully we’re in the middle of a good jam as you’re hearing this. Playing that set in the Everglades was the most fun I’ve ever had in my entire life, so I’m thrilled that some people had a positive reaction to it. Being able to play all night was something we’ve always wanted to try. For us, the idea of going out there for seven hours without any sort of plan whatsoever seemed to encapsulate the essence of improvisation. The location was beautiful and the jamming was relaxed. And, from my perspective, watching the sun come up over Page’s piano was sublime.
We are honored to be a part of this community of great people and amazing music. On behalf of all of us in the band, thanks for the award!
Mike Gordon
Text of Jammys Acceptance Letter: Grateful Dead
The complete transcript of many Jammys acceptance speeches/letters will appear here today, including those from B.B. King, Phish and more. Here is a copy of the Grateful Dead's response after garnering Release of the Year, So Many Roads.
Dear Jam Bands.Com:
When we first began to play, we frequently found, as Weir put
it, that sometimes "the song was over but we hadn't finished
playing." So we took a lesson from John Coltrane and began to
improvise modally. That faith in improvisation was something we
adopted before we ever stopped to think about it, but 35 years later
it still seems like a great idea. It was an idea that appealed to
lots of other people at the time, and then seemed to fade.
But Jam Bands.com, and the jam band community you serve, are
proof that a good idea never dies.
It's funny to feel venerable and paternal and like that, so
we don't. We're still the childish, indulgent noodlers we always
were -- or something like that. But if we set some sort of musical
example in the philosophic sense that anyone has found useful in
making their own music -- excellent. We're glad that you like So
Many Roads, and thank you.
And remember, the one is always wherever you think it is.
Best,
Grateful Dead

Documentary Filmmaker looking to interview jamband fans
Eric Limarenko, a graduate student from the Savannah College of Art and Design is producing a documentary film for his masters thesis on "the transcendent groove." He will be conducting interviews throughout the summer at various shows, and is looking for interview subjects and commentators. He states, "I will visually represent the transcendent groove with the use of color, rhythm and beat. Musicologists and musicians will also be interviewed to provide important commentary on the subject at hand. I want to focus on the magic of the hypnotic groove, where the music takes on an instinctive form, relying more fully on chance and the controlled accident. This is the
moment where the line between the musician and audience dissolve into one. I hope to make my audience contemplate the importance of music in their daily lives as well as the importance of music to the evolution of the human race." Limarenko will conduct interviews at the following shows:
PHISH in Atlanta June 23 + 24
ACOUSTIC SYNDICATE in Charlotte July 7
FOXTROT ZULU in Charlotte July 21
