Keller Williams Announces Summer Plans; New Album in the Works

Keller Williams has confirmed his summer tour itinerary. Williams is currently in the studio with drummer Dave Watts (The Motet) and bassist Tye North (formerly of Leftover Salmon) working on a new album. The group will perform as the Keller Williams Trio at the High Sierra Music Festival on July 6 and 8. Keller will also perform solo on July 7. Williams will play several other festivals this summer including the Telluride Bluegrass Festival June 22 in Telluride, CO, Salmonfest July 17 in Lesterville, MO and July 20 at the Sunshine Festival in Terra Alta, WV. In August, Keller hits the road with the “So Many Roads Tour” with Ratdog, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe and Rusted Root.

Steve Kimock Added to Tamarack Mountain Music Festival

Steve Kimock has been added to the line-up of this year’s Tamarack Mountain Music Festival. The event will be held July 20-22 at Tamarack Resort in Angel's Camp, CA. Line-up for Roots 2001 Festival Announced

The line-up for Roots 2001 has been released. The festival will take place on Father’s Day, June 17 in downtown Danbury, CT. Acts confirmed to perform include FRO, Hubinger Street, Blind Camel, The Grapes of Vaudevillian Fantasy, The Rafter Bats, Seeking Homer and Manic Mule among others. The event is free and will run from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Sound Tribe Sector Nine has announced its summer tour dates. Robert Randolph Sits in with Dave Matthews Band

Robert Randolph took the stage with the Dave Matthews Band on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden. Randolph who had opened the show, as well as the preceding night with The Family Band, joined the DMB on pedal steel for “All Along the Watchtower.”

Randolph and the Family Band will next perform on Saturday at the Bohemian Hall & Park in Astoria, NY.

John Medeski to Perform with Trey Anastasio for Three Shows This Summer

John Medeski will join Trey Anastasio and his band for three shows this summer. Medeski (Medeski, Martin & Wood) will perform July 20 at Riverport Amphitheatre in St. Louis, MO, July 21 at Alpine Valley in East Troy, WI, and July 22 at Verizon Wireless Music Center in Noblesville, IN. Due to a scheduling conflict, tour keyboardist Ray Paczkowski (Viperhouse) is unavailable for the July 21 show. However, both Paczkowski and Medeski will play keyboards for the July 20 and July 22 concerts. Anastasio's backing band also includes Russ Lawton (drums), Tony Markellis (bass), Dave Grippo (saxophone), Russell Remington (saxophone), Andy Moroz (saxophone) and Jennifer Hartswick (trumpet).

Merl Saunders to Headline CD Release Party for Phish Tribute Album

The Mockingbird Foundation has announced plans for a CD Release Party for the benefit album, Sharing In The Groove. Merl Saunders will headline the event, which will be held July 12 at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, CA. Ten Ton Chicken will open the show. Sharing In The Groove features an eclectic group of musicians covering the music of Phish. Galactic Releases Europe Dates

New Album Due from the Derek Trucks Band

The Derek Trucks Band has just finished work on a new album titled Joyful Noise. The CD will be the band's debut on Columbia Records and is due in stores August 27. Guest vocalists on the record include Solomon Burke, Ruben Blades, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Trucks' wife, Susan Tedeschi.

Jazz Mandolin Project, Original P Added to Summit Music Festival

Page McConnell, Mike Gordon Perform With John Entwistle Band

Phish’s Page McConnell and Mike Gordon sat in with the John Entwistle Band last night at a private show at B.B. King’s in New York City. McConnell and Gov’t Mule drummer Matt Abts joined the band for The Who’s “Long Live Rock” and Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode.” Gordon then took over on bass for a portion of the set.

Last Sunday, McConnell and Entwistle (The Who) recorded the track “Same Price” with Warren Haynes for the upcoming Gov’t Mule album, due out later this year. The CD features a very long list of special guests including Phil Lesh, Flea, Bootsy Collins, Les Claypool and Gregg Allman among others. Gordon is filming a documentary on the making of the album. John Medeski, Robert Randolph to Join North Mississippi Allstars at Newport Folk Festival

Festival Productions, Inc. has announced the line-ups for the Newport Folk Festival and the JVC Newport Jazz Festival, which will both be held at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, RI. The Folk Festival will take place August 3 –5 and will include a performance by North Mississippi Allstars with special guests John Medeski and Robert Randolph. Ghost Trane to Play Benefits for Injured Music Fan

Ghost Trane will play two benefit concerts for Tim “Nappy” Ullenburg, who was severely injured in a car accident while on Widespread Panic tour in April. New Charlie Hunter Album Set for September Release

Charlie Hunter is finishing work on a new album, which is not yet titled. The CD features John Ellis, Chris Lovejoy and Stephen Chopek as well as guest vocalists Theryl DeClouet (Galactic), Kurt Elling, Norah Jones and rapper Mos Def. The album is due out September 25 on Blue Note Records.

Charlie Hunter’s show from June 29, 2000 will be webcast tomorrow on www.hob.com. The concert was recorded at the House of Blues in Cambridge, MA. It will be cybercast continuously for twenty-four hours.

Les Claypool's Frog Brigade to Release Live Version of Pink Floyd's Animals

Les Claypool and his Frog Brigade will release Live Frogs – Set 2 July 24 on Prawn Song Records. The live album features the band’s performance of the classic Pink Floyd record, Animals. Claypool, who has been a fan of the album since he was a child, considers the release of Live Frogs – Set 2 a “wondrous milestone” in his career. “Nothing was more haunting to a prepubescent kid of those days than the sound of the squealing pig at the beginning of the aptly titled 'Pigs,'” says Les. “Animals is one of those albums that I've purchased multiple times over the years, and the aforementioned 'Pigs' is a song that I've always dreamed of performing given the right instrumentation. In the summer of 2000, I put together a little group called the Frog Brigade. With the Brigade, I had the instrumentation I needed to perform the tune. As we started learning 'Pigs,' I realized that we could take it one step further and actually play the album in its entirety." The Frog Brigade’s performance in October of 2000 at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall is featured on the album. The band’s line-up consists of Claypool, drummer Jay Lane, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, saxophonist Skerik and guitarists Todd Huth and Eenor. Claypool is currently in the studio mixing the debut Oysterhead album with Trey Anastasio (Phish), Stewart Copeland (The Police) and engineer Toby Wright (Primus, Metallica). The album is slated to be released this fall on Elektra Records.

Mimi Fishman Foundation Launches Website, Spring Auction

The Mimi Fishman Foundation has a launched a new website at www.mimifishman.org. The organization was founded in 1999 by Mimi Fishman and David Shulman and raises funds and awareness for charities that focus on Glaucoma research as well as children and women related organizations. "The drive behind the Foundation is to honor Mimi, who was one of the most charitable individuals I have ever known,” says Shulman. “We are pleased and honored to be able to volunteer our time to allow us to continue to support the charities that were important to Mimi. We hope our new web site allows us to increase our fund raising activities, thus issuing more and larger grants to the charities the Foundation supports.”

The Spring 2001 online auction will benefit the Boulder County Safehouse and the New Beginnings Evangelical Children's Home. Items up for bid include tickets and passes to see Trey Anastasio, String Cheese Incident, The Gathering of the Vibes and Merl Saunders. The auction runs through June 13.

A benefit concert for the Foundation is tentatively scheduled for October 5 in Syracuse, NY.

Dickey Betts Band to Tour in Support of New CD

The Dickey Betts Band will release its new album, Let’s Get Together, in July. The CD includes a wide variety of styles including Latin, bebop jazz and blues. The group consists of Betts (guitar, vocals), Mark May (guitar, vocals), David Stoltz (bass), Kris Jensen (saxophone, flute), Mark Greenberg (drums), Matt Zeiner (keyboards, vocals) and Frankie Lombardi (percussion).

The band is currently touring with .38 Special and The Charlie Daniels Band. The tour hits Jannus Landing in St. Petersburg, FL tomorrow. Ominous Seapods Announce Hiatus

The Ominous Seapods have announced that they will take a break from touring after this summer. "We have decided that after our scheduled shows this summer we are going to take some time to ourselves and try some different things for a while," bassist Thomas Pirozzi said in a statement. “How long you ask? Good question. We may decide to record some more music or do some shows at a later date but we really don't know for sure. So basically, the shows this summer will be your last chance to see us play live for at least a while, maybe longer."

Miracle Orchestra Announces Reunion Shows

Miracle Orchestra has announced plans for two reunion shows in the coming weeks. The quartet, which last performed in November, features guitarist Geoff Scott (Club d’Elf), bassist Garrett Sayers (The Motet), saxophonist Jared Sims and drummer Bill Carbone. The first show is slated for Thursday May 29 at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, MA and will feature special guests from The Reggae Goldies (an ensemble consisting of members of Pressure Cooker, Joint Chiefs and John Brown’s Body). MO will also perform in the late night tent at the Adirondack Mountain Music Festival on Saturday May 31 in Lyonsdale, NY.

Gov’t Mule Announces Additional Summer Dates; Solo Acoustic Shows

Gov’t Mule has added a couple dates to its summer itinerary. The band will celebrate July 4th with a performance at Simon Estes Amphitheater in Des Moines, IA. Although many speculated that the band would unveil a permanent bassist at “The Deepest End” concert earlier this month, an announcement has not yet been made. The group has confirmed that Greg Rzab will perform at the May 31 show at Pensacola Springfest in Pensacola, FL and George Porter Jr. will take the stage June 6 at the Relix Magazine 30th Anniversary celebration in New York’s Central Park.

In other news, Warren Haynes will play a handful of solo acoustic gigs this summer. The itinerary includes June 15 at Bonnaroo in Manchester, TN, July 12 at the Gathering of the Vibes in Duanesburg, NY, August 15 at the Rocky Mountain Folk Fest in Lyons, CO, August 16 at Sunshine Daydream Festival in Terra Alta, WV and August 17 at the Berkshire Mountain Music Festival in Great Barrington, MA.

Haynes and Mike Gordon will appear at the Somerville Theatre in Somerville, MA tomorrow night for a screening of Rising Low. They will be host a Q & A session, which will follow the movie. In addition, both Warren and Mike will be on Boston’s WHDH-TV, Channel 7 tomorrow at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Tea Leaf Green guitarist Josh Clark took the stage with Del Mar Saturday night at the Annex Night Club in Madison, WI. Clark joined the group for the subtly titled “Guatemalan Insanity Pepper,” trading guitar licks with Del Mar’s Nate Kendall. Tea Leaf Green opened the gig, which was a celebration for the release of Del Mar’s new CD, Face to Face.

The line-up for Chuck Berry’s backing band at the Summit on the Hudson festival has been confirmed. The Steve Kimock Band has released several new spring and summer tour dates. John Molo Hits the Road With Modereko

Phil & Friends drummer John Molo performing with a new side project called Modereko. The band includes trumpeter John D’earth, saxophonist Bobby Read and guitarist/bassist Tim Kobza. The musicians first met during a recording session with Bruce Hornsby. "John Molo talked about wanting to have a band that would be groove-oriented where you'd just write up from the drum part-all inclusive music that's both improvised and composed and draws no barriers as to what kind of sources it can draw from," says D’earth. The group’s moniker consists of the first two letters of each band member’s last name. The quartet’s self-titled debut was released last week on Blue Thumb Records. Modereko is currently touring in support of the album and plays tonight at the Barrel House Brewing Company in Cinncinati, OH. The band is expected to tour this summer as well.

Jook Reunites

Baltimore-based Jook has reunited. The band appeared on the first Homegrown Music Network compilation and performed at many festivals in the mid 90s, before calling it quits in 1998. Jook will play its first show in three years tonight at the 8 x 10 club in Baltimore, MD.

Members of moe., Miracle Orchestra and Mahavishnu Project to Collaborate with Project Object

Beginning May 30, Project Object will play a four-week Wednesday night residency at Wetlands Preserve in New York. The band includes former Frank Zappa guitarist and vocalist Ike Willis, Rick Bartow (bass, vocals), André Cholmondeley (guitar, vocals), Robbie Mangano (guitar, vocals), Mumbo (drums, vocals, keys), Wes Paich (drums, vocals, keys) and Jordan Shapiro (keyboards, vocals). Special guests will join band at each of its Wetlands’ performances. Guests include members of Miracle Orchestra on May 30, members of Mahavishnu Project on June 13, and moe.’s Al Schnier and Jim Loughlin on June 20. Project Object also plans to play a surprise Zappa album in its entirety on June 13.

Lake Trout Confirms European Dates

Lake Trout will head to Europe for three shows in July. The band will perform July 19 and 20 at Jazz & Image at Villa Celimontana at Villa Celimontana Piazza della Navicella in Rome, Italy. Zyrah's Orange Seeks New Bassist

Zyrah's Orange has announced that bassist Ben Thibault has decided to leave the band in order to pursue other interests. "We are truly going to miss Ben, “ the band said in a statement. “His groove, musicality and sense of humor have been a major factor in the formation of present-day Zyrah's Orange, and it will not be easy to replace him. With Ben's leaving, however, we do have a chance to be able to venture into some difference musical areas, and we look forward to that." The band also plans to add a keyboardist to the line-up. Thibault will continue to perform with the band through mid-summer.

Charlie Hunter sat in with Motherbug Sunday at the Wild Duck Brewery in Eugene, OR. Hunter joined the band on tambourine during “Sultan.” Saturday at the Aladdin Theater in Portland, OR, Motherbug guitarist Will Bernard sat in with Hunter’s band for “Al Green,” “Shuffle Boil” and “The Spin Seekers.”

Both Hunter and Bernard were members of the band TJ Kirk, which performed the music of Thelonious Monk, James Brown and Rahsaan Roland Kirk.
