New Grateful Dead Tribute Album on the Way

Widespread Panic and Leftover Salmon are among the bands appearing on a new Grateful Dead tribute album, entitled Stolen Roses. Grateful Dead Hour host, David Gans, is coordinating the project. “This is something I've been wanting to do for years,” says Gans. “It's a collection of other artists' recordings of Grateful Dead songs -- not stuff that was recorded just for this project, but things that people did on the natch. There's a lot of fun stuff out there that's no longer in print, so I've been wanting to gather the best of the covers onto a CD so people can appreciate these interpretations of the Dead's great songs.”

Previously recorded songs featured on the CD include “Scarlet Begonias” by Sublime,“Franklin’s Tower” by Henry Rollins, “Cumberland Blues” by Cache Valley Drifters, “Loser” by Danny Carnahan and Robin Petrie, “Brown-Eyed Women” by The Pontiac Brothers, “The Golden Road” by The Bobs, “Pasta on the Mountain” (a spoof on “Fire on the Mountian”) by Leftover Salmon, "Ripple" by Sex Mob and “Uncle John’s Band” by the Standord University Marching Band. Patti Smith's version of "Black Peter" will also be on the album. It was recorded after the death of Jerry Garcia and is previously unreleased.

There are also tracks on Stolen Roses that were recorded specifically for the project. “I contacted Widespread Panic, looking for a live version of ‘Cream Puff War,’ which they have been doing in concert,” says Gans. “As it happened, they were in the studio working on their next CD, so they recorded it for us.” The Persuasions also recorded an a cappella version of “Black Muddy River.”

The final track listing for the album has not yet been finalized. "There are some other special recordings that I'm not ready to talk about yet because we don't have them signed, sealed and delivered,” adds Gans. “More news on that later.” The album is due out in June.

The Slip Sign With Flying Frog Records

The Slip have signed with Flying Frog Records and will release their second album, Does, on the label. The new studio album, Does, is due out in late spring.

The Slip recently wrapped up a West Coast tour that included stops in California, Colorado and Arizona. They’ll tour in the Southeast beginning March 17 at The Cotton Club in Atlanta, GA. For a complete list of tour dates, visit http://www.theslip.com/upcoming.htm .

Boston’s Paradise Rock Club Sold

One of the most legendary venues in Boston has been sold. The Paradise Rock Club and M-80 nightclub have been sold to the Il Panino Restaurant Group for a reported $900,000. The Paradise has played host to some of rock’s biggest acts for more than twenty years, including U2, The Police, Dire Straits, Prince, Aerosmith, and Tom Petty, as well as jam bands such as Phish, moe., Strangefolk and Percy Hill (among countless others). However, recently the club had been shut down several times by the city for underage drinking, rowdy behavior and overcrowding. In 1997, New England Patriots Drew Bledsoe and Max Lane jumped into a mosh pit at an Everclear concert and seriously injured a woman, causing the city to crack down on the club. There have been three separate underage drinking violations in recent months and it was expected that the venue would lose its liquor license at a city licensing hearing today. It is unclear if the sale of the club will prevent the city from revoking the license.

Max Creek was scheduled to play the Paradise tomorrow, but the band has postponed the show until further notice.

The second set of music will be a mixture of other original songs that I’ve written, both new and old that are unrelated to The Maui Project. Because capacity is extremely limited at just over 2,000 seats, only one show at a time will go on sale. (The April 1 show will go on sale at 10 a.m. until it sells out, and then the April 2 show will go on sale...etc).

The band also will not allow taping at the three shows. No specific reason has been given, however the band's web site states "The members of the Band respectfully request that the Athens shows be attended without taping gear. That is our wish just for those nights - The rest of the tour will be business as usual. Please know, we hold the craft and sport of taping by audience members in high regard. We'd be grateful if you trust us on this and leave all your recording gear behind. Dancing is still encouraged."
