Legendary songwriter John Prine has postponed eight upcoming concerts, and according to a statement posted on his behalf by his record label and family, he will require surgery in the near future.

“In consultation with his doctors, John has been advised that he has an elevated risk for a stroke,” reads the statement. “He will have surgery this week to insert a stent which will remedy the issue. He looks forward to a full and speedy recovery.”

This is not Prine’s first encounter with health issues. A bout with squamous cell cancer in the late-’90s, left him with altered vocal chords. And in 2013, he was diagnosed with operable lung cancer, and similarly had to postpone a number of gigs.

Most recently, Prine has been riding high after the release of his acclaimed studio LP The Tree of Forgiveness, which was the highest-charting album of his entire career.
