Joe Russo’s Almost Dead returned to their birthplace last night, kicking off a three night run at the Brooklyn Bowl in New York. The band, with bassist Dave Dreiwitz back on stage, rolled through a selection of Grateful Dead classics as well as some surprises along the way.

The first surprise came out of “Shakedown Street” late in the first set. After a “Space” section, the group found themselves in the middle of the Allman Brothers classic “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” before their “Mission in the Rain” closer. This marks the first time Almost Dead has performed the song.

Another surprise cover in the second set came in the form of a Joe Russo-led take on Father John Misty’s “I’m Writing a Novel,” another debut for the group. During the closing “Not Fade Away,” Questlove took to the turntables early for his weekly DJ residency to play along to the clapping of “Not Fade Away.”

Almost Dead returns to the Brooklyn Bowl tonight.
