Malik Isaac Taylor, known by his stage name Phife Dawg as a part of the hip hop pioneer group A Tribe Called Quest, passed away at the age of 45. Rolling Stone confirmed the news of his passing and in a statement from Phife Dawg’s manager and family, they revealed that he died from complications from diabetes.

Taylor battled multiple health issues over the years, receiving a kidney transplant from his wife in 2008 after battling diabetes for many years.

Phife Dawg co-founded Tribe in 1985 alongside Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. The group rose to stardom through records like The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders and recently appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their debut record People’s Instinctive Travel and the Paths of Rhythm.
